I just returned from a week in Switzerland. I was attending The CSCL Alpine Rendez-Vous 2007. CSCL stands for Computer Supported Collaborative Learning and I was part of a workshop that focused on Networked Learners and Networked Learning. In fact, I know very little about networked learning or even learning in general, but there were many interesting researchers attending the workshop who know very much about the subject and that was really exciting. I was to present my PhD project during the workshop and since my subject is online social networking I tried to make the connection between social networking sites and networked learning. My claim was that networked learning could be one way of understanding what is going on at social networking sites. If you take that stand, social networking sites could be viewed as networked learning environments and I find that perspective interesting. Especially, when I think of the amount of informal learning that actually takes place on sites like Arto where young people are willing to e.g. help each other with advanced HTML design, discuss society-oriented problems in the debate forum or “blog their guts out” in pages long blog posts at their profiles. sid07.jpgIn my PhD project I am working together with The Media Council for Children and Young People. Among other things we are right now putting the finishing touches to two online questionnaires about social networking and young people’s use of the internet – one questionnaire for parents and one for children and young people themselves. Both of the questionnaires will be launched at Safer Internet Day 2007 which takes place February 6th all over Europe.

Since the Media Council is appointed Awareness Node in Denmark under the EU Safer Internet Plus Programme they are coordinating all the national activities in relation to Safer Internet Day 2007. Read more about the activities in Denmark or take the quiz about internet safety and see how safe you really are online 🙂

I was reading an interesting blog post by danah boyd, a PhD student from UC Berkeley School of Information, about child abuse, sexual predators and the moral panic in the US. In this post she refers to an article by Peter Reilly called The Facts About Online Sex Abuse and Schools. In the article Reilly shares some data about sexual predators. One of the charts shows that 95% of child abuse and sexual abuse is perpetrated by family members (79% of the perpetrators are parents). Only in 5% of the cases the perpetrators are strangers who the children have met either online or face-to-face.

See for example this chart that puts some perspective on the threat from strangers – online or not:

September last year I gave a guest lecture on Arto at the Master on ICT and Learning at Aalborg University. The lecture was videotaped and the video is now available as streaming video with integrated slides. The title of the lecture was “Arto – Imellem sociale relationer og individualitet”. You can see the lecture (only in Danish) here.malene.jpg

Also, check out our other streaming video presentations from e-Learning Lab.
